Child 102659GDN (M) 9-5-06

Description:

5-14-08 UPDATE:
Once again I find myself updating this wonderful little boy. A recent visit with this little one produced a video showing how well he is doing in so many ways. His foster mother continues to sing his praises and from what the video shows she has many reasons to be proud of him. He has a vocabulary of quite a few single words which he uses appropriately, he is curious, loves to play indoors and outside with a preference for being outside. He enjoys running all around and seems to be full of energy. He can also spend and enjoy quieter indoor activities and loves to have his foster mom read to him. He frequently brings her books to share with him. This little one follows age appropriate verbal directions and is generally a good boy. His foster Mom also reports that when she does her Yoga exercises, he joins right in. They were even able to get some of this on his recent video. The doctors, his foster mother and his social worker continue to keep a watchful eye on his medical situation.

12-13-07 UPDATE:
This little guy is well loved in his foster home and his foster mother tends to brag about him. We’ve also been told that all the social workers at the office love this little guy and look forward to his visits. He is now taking five to ten steps on his own and adding more steps regularly. He has a few understandable words in his vocabulary and says words that only he understands. This little one is now at the stage where he can follow simple directions such as: “push the button, let’s go outside, get up on my back,” etc. He also responds to praise and people leaving with appropriate gestures or actions. This child loves music and moving to it, he likes toys that have sound and he is a good laugher. Although he is quite shy at first with strangers, once they sit down to play with his or carry him on their back he warms right up. This shy, active and curious child is also able to turn on the tears when he thinks they will work for him. If he wants something he can make quite a fuss and if he gets it he can turn those tears right off.

This adorable baby is curious, alert and developmentally doing beautifully. He was born full term weighing 3.15kg. He is an infant who concentrates well, babbles well and smiles easily. He is well loved and cared for by his foster mother. This baby is a waiting child because he was born with biliary atresia (rare disease of the liver). At about one month old he had surgery (the Kasai procedure) for his condition. At this time he is taking medicine, eating a special formula and receiving monthly blood tests so that his condition can be monitored. This procedure is not necessarily a “fix” and, despite the fact that the doctors say his progress is better than even they expected; significant medical issues may be a reality for this little one. A wonderful explanation of both this disorder and the Kasai procedure can be found at: http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/atresia/index.htm#1

Despite the medical concerns described above, this little guy shows good development and is a social little one with those he knows well. He tends to be a bit shy and stingy with his smiles when he is with people who are new to him. This little one says “Mama” (in his own language), enjoys himself in a mirror, rolls over, follows a dropped object, reaches for toys and bangs objects during play. He just LOVES toys. He makes great eye contact, bears weight well on his legs and vocalizes. This little guy loves music and even when he’s upset, music will calm him. In other words he, he is doing what he is expected to do at this age. His foster mother loves him but also describes him as a bit stubborn at times. He is a little one who knows what he wants and being held is what he wants and being put down is what he really doesn’t want.

***A Grant has been applied for and should be available for the placement of this little boy.
